Directions To Balule Nature Reserve
From Johannesburg (OR Tambo International Airport) to Hoedspruit
From Car Rentals, take the R21 signed to Boksburg – you need the right-hand lane immediately you come out of the covered Car Rental area.
After a few kilometres, take the R12 signed to Witbank & Middelburg. The R12 joins the N4 at Witbank. Continue along the N4 until Belfast.
At Belfast turn off the N4 on the R540: the road goes into the centre of the town and then is signed to the right to Dullstroom and Lydenberg.
In Lydenberg, take the R36: the signs are not very clear, so care is needed. Go through Ohrigstad, and over the Abel Erasmus pass.
About 10 km after the Pass and the Strijdom Tunnel, the R36 turns off to the left; stay on the road that goes straight, the R527 to Hoedspruit.
In Hoedspruit, turn left at the second four-way stop onto the R40, signed Phalaborwa, and continue as indicated below from Hoedspruit.
From Nelspruit to Hoedspruit
Take the R40 to White River, Hazyview, Bosbokrand, Klaserie and Hoedspruit. From the four-way stop on the R40 at Hoedspruit continue as indicated below from Hoedspruit.

From Hoedspruit (Eastgate) Airport to Hoedspruit town
Exit the airport area and turn right at the T-junction. After a few kilometres you go through a control gate and just after that turn right onto the R40 to Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. From the four-way stop on the R40 at Hoedspruit continue as indicated below from Hoedspruit.
From Hoedspruit to Balule Nature Reserve
From the four-way stop at Hoedspruit at the junction of the R527 with the R40, drive north (signposted Phalaborwa) for 16.4 km, and turn into the Balule Nature Reserve entrance (there is a sign about 200 m before the entrance which says “Balule Olifants West Gate”, and there is an 80 km speed limit sign just after that.)
From Phalaborwa Airport
Turn left out of the airport into President Steyn Street; go left at the next T-junction into President Kruger Street. Turn right at the traffic lights/robot 50 m later, onto Hendrick van Eck Street. Go straight across at the next traffic lights/robot and at the next junction, a 4-way stop, go left into Sealene Street. After less than 100 m there is another 4-way stop: turn right here into Potgieter Street. After the road bends sharply left there is a 3-way stop: turn right, signposted Hoedspruit. At the next 4-way stop a few kilometres later, turn left (signposted ‘R530 Hoedspruit, Lydenburg’, although some maps show it as the R40). It is worth noting the mileage on the odometer at this point. Stay on this main road, signed Hoedspruit and/or White River, going past turn-offs for Tzaneen (after 31.7 km) and Ohrigstad & Lydenburg (after 37.5 km.) The Balule Nature reserve gate is after 47.4 km and there is a sign (“Balule Olifants West gate”) about 200 m before the gate.
From Balule Nature Reserve Gate to Leopards View Game Lodge
Once through the gate, go straight ahead on “Olifants Road” for 3.3 km. The tall fence on your right will come to an end at this point and you will see an airstrip ahead of you on the right. Turn left onto “Sable Road”, which is clearly signposted.
After 1.4 km, turn right at the sign onto the Leopard’s View Game Lodge entrance road – the Lodge is at the top of the hill after 300 m and we will be ready to greet you as you arrive.
